Different Opinions: Two State Solution

A piece on the Middle East Conflict written by student Jacob Goldstein:

“’If the Arabs put down their weapons today, there would be no more violence. If the Jews put down their weapons today, there would be no more Israel’”-Benjamin Netanyahu said this in 2010 during a time of violent conflict. This state of mind was relevant in 2010, but even more so today. Israel has been patient with the Palestinian people. They have tried to lead several peace negotiations through the United Nations, but none have worked. This failure has stemmed from the simple fact that the Palestinians refuse to acknowledge Israel as a country, and continue to resort to violence with the only goal to wipe Israel off the map. In my opinion, a two state solution is not possible with the pre-1967 borders due to the fact that they are indefensible. The pre-1967 borders results in Israel giving up the entire West Bank to the Palestinians. Rockets coming from the West Bank, and hitting Tel-Aviv is equivalent to rockets fired from Encino into Sherman Oaks. Israel left the Gaza strip, and in return we were hit with more rockets. We must not make this mistake twice, for the sake of the security of Israel. But, the Palestinians insist on these borders and will not compromise for anything else. In the past 12 years, Hamas terrorists in Gaza have fired over 12,000 rockets into Israel. Just imagine trying to go to sleep, with the threat of a bomb blowing you and your family sky high. The fear of a parent tucking their kids in at night, not knowing whether it is safe to do so. A two state solution might be the answer, no one really knows, but with the facts presented and violence escalading, I do not see how it will be possible, if ever.
