The bigger the government the smaller the citizen. Western Europeans, with their Welfare Sates, assume that the state will take care of them and take care of all their preoccupations. People therefore feel like they are entitled to free benefits from the state. We Americans, however, focus on more important things; such as working hard and taking care of ourselves.
The problem is that in the Welfare State all of people’s hardships are taken care of. People no longer need to think about working hard and taking care of themselves. In fact, work is seen as a pain to be avoided. Therefore, the preoccupation of Western Europeans are more self-centered, where people focus on where they will travel on vacation year long. That’s what’s left.
